State Police Announce DWI Checkpoint for East Baton Rouge July 3rd

Louisiana State Police Troop A (along with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Central Police Department) will conduct a Sobriety Checkpoint at an undisclosed location in East Baton Rouge Parish. The checkpoint will take place this evening, July 3, 2013 from 9:00 pm until 3:00 am. Troopers and officers will be looking for those drivers who choose to drive impaired during the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Sobriety checkpoints are effective enforcement tools because they serve as a strong deterrent to impaired driving. The task of stopping impaired drivers is a joint effort of law enforcement agencies as well as the public. By never allowing an impaired driver to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and reporting dangerous drivers to law enforcement, the public can play an important role in the reduction of crashes caused by impaired drivers. Making poor decisions in a vehicle such as driving impaired, driving while distracted and/or not wearing a seatbelt leads to serious injuries and deaths every day across the state. Troopers stress to drivers that impairment is not caused by only alcohol. If a driver is found to be under the influence of certain narcotic medications or illegal substances, they too can be arrested for DWI. Troopers have a ZERO tolerance for impaired persons found to be operating a motor vehicle in this state. Troop A reminds motorists to drive carefully and make Louisiana’s roadways safe for everyone during the Independence Day holiday. If you see an aggressive or impaired driver you can report them by dialing *LSP (*577) or your local law enforcement agency.

A 19-year-old man was arrested for his second DWI after he allegedly caused a crash on I-10, fled the scene, and allegedly tried to outrun police. According to the arrest report, a trooper with the Louisiana State Police responded to the hit-and-run crash on Sunday, July 21 at roughly 1:15 a.m. The trooper located the suspect’s vehicle because the victim followed the car after it took off. The suspect, Darin Terrell, reportedly exited off I-10 at the Highland Road exit, then re-entered the interstate. He got off the Interstate a second time at the Siegen exit. The trooper followed Terrell down Siegen Lane. “I observed the vehicle attempt to turn into a business parking lot,” the arrest report explained. “I then activated my overhead lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then turned around in the parking lot, and proceeded toward me in a head-on manner. The suspect then went around my unit and began to travel south on [Siegen Lane].” Terrell eventually stopped his vehicle and surrendered. The trooper noted that he seemed to be intoxicated. A chemical test later revealed his blood alcohol level was .100 percent. Terrell was arrested and charged with Hit-and-Run, DWI (second offense), Careless Operation, and Resisting Arrest. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a bond of $3,500. From NBC33.

The DPS Police Department has arrested a Prairieville man and charged him with 3rd Offense DWI. According to an affidavit, a DPS Officer came upon a vehicle that was partially in the roadway Sunday morning around 1:54am. The vehicle appeared to be disabled from a flat or missing tire. While speaking with the driver of the vehicle, James L. Jenkins, 47,  Carolyn K. Drive, Prairieville, the investigating officer noticed a strong smell of alcohol. Jenkins was also having a difficult time with his balance and had glassy, bloodshot eyes, according to the affidavit. Jenkins was asked if he had anything to drink that night and he replied that he didn’t. After observing Jenkins for a moment the officer attempted to give Jenkins a standard field sobriety test, which Jenkins refused. Jenkins was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. While being handcuffed, Jenkins refused to turn around and comply causing the officer to use force. Once handcuffed, Jenkins continued resisting and trying to pull away from the officer. A search of Jenkins’ vehicle turned up a 16oz can of beer that was still cold, according to the affidavit. Jenkins was transported to a nearby DPS Police Station where he refused a chemical breath test. He was then booked with 3rd Offense DWI, Resisting Arrest and Open Container. He was taken to EBR Parish Prison where he is currently being held in lieu of a $27,500 bond. Follow Us @RedStickNow
